#3- Turas

What is Turas?
Turas is a coach education programme to create a coach and player pathway which was devised by Leinster GAA where provincial and county coaches travel and support clubs in implementing quality coaching in clubs, schools and academies.
Why is Turas so effective?
Turas offers real-time learning through a session with the actual players you coach. The visiting Games Promoter is now facing the same challenges, behaviours and conditions you face every session.
We’ve all attended coaching courses and either forgotten the material,  found it hard to adapt to our team or wondered what the focus should be with the players you coach for their age and ability.
For the coach it’s effectiveness is in the support it offers and the backup that comes with a Turas visit. Talking to coaches they emphasised how it wasn’t a coaching inspection, more an in-service and a non- judgemental off-loading of ideas.
For the county/ provincial boards they receive proper feedback from their GPOs. They can use real tangible feedback to dictate the future coaching/player needs- do they need to organise more blitz where high catching or hooking or kicking with the weaker foot are the focus of scoring? Do they need to facilitate a coaching workshop on dealing effectively with challenging behaviour? The visiting coach can bring relevant information back to aid future planning.
When will it be adopted in full by all provincial councils?
With it’s success in Leinster and all the benefits that it can bring we can only hope that it takes a turas around the country! Counties that have adopted it in full are the envy of the coaching fraternity. Their fortuity at having this facility available to them personally and the ability to hop across to their neighbouring club to watch a Turas session is indeed a progressive step in coach education. Monkey see, monkey do. See quality coaching, do quality coaching.
